He was reared in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, from twelve years of age. He learned the cabinet maker's trade with John Sims, and followed it for several years; then engaged in carpenter work until 1880, when he retired. In 1860 he erected a planing mill, which he conducted about ten years.
