He and his wife were natives of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and early settlers of Lawrence County.

He was born in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, near the Forks of Yough, and came with his parents to Lawrence County in 1804. He was a farmer during his whole life.

He remained at home, and inherited the family property when his parents died, and he carried on agricultural pursuits there through his subsequent life.
