When quite young he moved with his parents to Dry Run, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, where his boyhood was spent in working on a farm and clerking in a store. Subsequently he removed with his parents to Doylesburg, and in 1879 engaged in mercantile business with his mother, which association lasted until 1883, when he commenced on his own account. In the spring of 1886 he put up a store building, 22x63 feet, two stories high, which he kept well stored with a selected stock of dry goods, notions, groceries, ready-made clothing, boots and shoes, hats and caps, hardware, queensware, stationery, wall paper and general merchandise. His motto was "Quick sales and small profits, and the best goods for the least money." He took produce in exchange for goods, and did a thriving business.
