General Notes: Husband - George A. Dougherty, M.D.
The family came to America in 1840 and made their new home in Washington, Washington County, Pennsylvania. He attended the common schools of the borough, later attended Washington College, and then commenced reading medicine. In 1859 the family returned to Ireland, and he entered the University of Glasgow (Scotland), where he passed through a full curriculum-four years, graduating with the class of 1864-'65. The buysar fee which he paid on entering the university was ten pounds sterling.
At the hospital he took a special course in medicine, and received from the university the degrees of M. D. and C. M. (Master in Surgery). The University of Glasgow was far famed as a seat of learning, and was one of the oldest institutions of the kind, having been founded in the year 1450. After finishing his course at the university he spent one year in a dispensary. In 1866 he returned to America, and in the following year commenced the practice of his profession. He developed a very extensive general practice, his ride being not only far and wide over the county, but even considerably beyond. The Doctor possessed a very complete and select library, and kept abreast of the times.
He and his wife were members of the United Presbyterian Church of Washington.
In 1906 he erected a handsome, modern dwelling, which stood on the old homestead lot which was his place of residence during his whole life at Washington. At his office at No. 127 North Main street, he had a valuable library, in the selection of which he took much interest, and which contained many rare old English volumes, together with the apparatus generally utilized by the progressive men of science at that day, to which class Dr. Dougherty belonged. With his family he was a member of the Second United Presbyterian Church at Washington. He belonged to the Washington County Medical Association.
His daughter died Dec. 8, 1908. [TCHWWC] But the same article speaks of her as being alive. Possibly this is the date of death of his wife?
