He learned the trade of a cabinet maker in Pittsburgh, and settled in Indiana, Pennsylvania. He and his wife were among the early members of the Methodist Episcopal church of Indiana. He was among the early advocates of temperance and anti-slavery in the days when it "tried men's souls" so to do. He served for some years as a justice of the peace.
