He was reared on a farm and received his education in the Maysville, Pennsylvania, public schools. In 1879 he bought his father's farm and finished building the residence, which had been commenced by his father. He was a Republican in politics and a member and trustee of Olivet United Presbyterian church. In addition to farming he raised considerable stock and in later years gave some attention to raising thoroughbred horses and cattle.
