General Notes: Husband - Hon. C. Edward Carothers

He was born in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, but was reared and educated in Fayette County. In 1882, Mr. Carothers came to Washington County, where he became extensively engaged in agricultural pursuits. In association with his son, William E. Carothers, and R. G. Lutton, he established the Pasteur Dairy Company, which developed into a large enterprise of that section. From early manhood Mr. Carothers took an active interest in public affairs and was frequently chosen for responsible positions by his fellow citizens. He served one term as sheriff of Washington County, and in 1908 was elected a member of the General Assembly.
He and his family were members of the Chartiers Presbyterian Church.

He received his education in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, supplementing his public school training by a course in the academy at that place, and worked for his father until he was about twenty-three years of age. He then became manager of the farm, of which he had charge for some time, and later became the owner. He was a practical agriculturist, thoroughly familiar with the details of that occupation, and a strong advocate of scientific methods. In 1900 he began the manufacture of ice cream in Washington, Pennsylvania, and in 1910 incorporated the business under the name of the Carothers Dairy Company, of which he became the president.
He was a Republican and exerted a strong influence in the local councils of the party. He was chairman of the Republican county committee during the administrations of Presidents McKinley, Taft and Harding and also acted in that capacity when Calvin Coolidge became the nation's chief executive. Mr. Carothers was elected to the state legislature in 1901 and from 1902 until 1904, inclusive, served as sheriff of Washington County. He did important and successful work for good roads, being the prime mover in the building of the Hill Church road, in Washington County, and he was a member of the Board of National Highways. He belongs to the local lodge of Elks and is one of the influential members of the Washington Chamber of Commerce. He was affiliated with the Chartiers Presbyterian church.
