He was reared on a farm and received a good rudimentary education in the common schools adjacent to his home. In 1890 he engaged in mercantile business at Edri, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, and continued the same until 1895, in which year he disposed of his stock and took up his residence in New Florence, Westmoreland County, where he established a general store, which he disposed of in 1897. He was appointed, October 4, 1897, postmaster at New Florence. In religion he was a Presbyterian, holding membership in the church of that denomination at New Florence, and in politics was a Republican.
