He was born in North Liberty, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and reared in Mercer, where his parents located when he was three years of age. He received his primary education at the public schools of Mercer and at Westminster College, where he spent one year, after graduating from the Mercer high school. He entered the medical department of the Western University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1901, after which time he practiced at Mercer. He was a member of the Mercer County, Pennsylvania State, and Northwestern Medical Societies. He was elected coroner of Mercer County for three years in 1904, as a candidate on the Republican ticket. He was sergeant and surgeon of Cottage State Hospital at Mercer and for five years was secretary of the Mercer County Medical Society.
