He was born in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and from there came to the area that is now Lawrence County at a very early day.

He worked at tanning until he was twenty-three years of age, when he was given 100 acres of land, on which he lived until his death.

He was the father of three sons and seven daughters, six of whom were living in 1888.
