He was educated at Jefferson College, Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, and entered the office of Dr. James Stevens, of Washington, Pennsylvania, as a student of medicine, after which he entered the University of Pennsylvania, but did not complete the course at that institution. About 1839 he settled at Elizabeth, Allegheny County, and practiced about a year. He then married a daughter of John Marshel, of Washington, and came to Washington and opened an office and practiced till his death in 1878, at which time he was the oldest practitioner in the town.
He was an active member of the board of trustees of Washington Female Seminary, a member of the board of directors of the First National Bank for ten or fifteen years, president of the Washington Cemetery for eighteen years, an elder in the United Presbyterian Church, and for many years its treasurer.

He was born in Brush Run district, Washington County, Pennsylvania. His father dying when he was a young child, his mother, a woman of rare judgment and energy, trained him in habits of industry and frugality. He attended Jefferson College at Canonsburg, but did not complete the last term of the Senior year to graduate. He read medicine in the office and under the care of Dr. Stevens, of Washington, Pennsylvania, and also studied at the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Having completed his course and been admitted to practice, he located in Westmoreland County, but remained there only a short time. He removed to, and settled permanently in Washington, where he entered into the performance of the duties which kept him constantly and busily employed the remainder of his life. Notwithstanding the demands of his extensive practice, he found time to devote to many other of the interests of the town. For twenty years or more he was President of the Cemetery Association of which he was one of the original incorporators and a member of the Board of Managers from its organization in 1853; Director and member of the Business Committee of the First National Bank; Trustee of the Female Seminary.
From early life he was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, and for many years a Ruling Elder in the Washington Congregation.
At the time of his death, he was the oldest practicing physician in Washington. The last days of May, Dr. Clark was in Pittsburgh attending a medical convention, when he was taken ill with cramp colic, and had to be taken home to Washington, but the attention given him proved unavailing and he died.
