He was a graduate of Duff's Business College and went into business as a merchant at Venice, Washington County, Pennsylvania, but sold out there and started a general store at Jeannette, Westmoreland County, where he was engaged at the time of his death. He was an elder in the United Presbyterian Church at that place.
