General Notes: Husband - Charles William Carbeau
Ellwood City, Lawrence Co, PA - Bilbobern Farms
He was educated in the common and high schools of Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, and on leaving the latter went into the wood patterning field as an apprentice. While serving the preliminary to become a journeyman wood pattern-maker, Mr. Carbeau continued his studies by taking evening and correspondence school courses in mechanical engineering. After serving only three years of his apprenticeship, he gave up training for a career in the wood pattern business and went to Youngstown, where he became a mechanical engineer in the employ of the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company; four years later he entered the employ of the Pittsburgh Seamless Tube Company, being placed in charge of the machine building on construction work. Subsequently, he worked for the American Steel Company. In 1921 he returned to Lawrence County and sought a career in Ellwood City. Here he found something in keeping with his knowledge and experience and purchased the plant and all the holdings of the Ellwood Foundry and Machine Shop. In the same year Mr. Carbeau, wishing to expand the business of his new enterprise, incorporated with G. F. Zehner and J. S. McFeaters, he himself becoming secretary and treasurer, Mr. Zehner president, and Mr. McFeaters, vice-president. The Ellwood Foundry and Machine Company Inc., was founded in 1900 by F. D. Lowry, whose beginning in the iron world was extremely modest. The company was conducted by Mr. Lowry for three years before he enlisted the association of another man, Robert J. McKee. Under the partnership thus formed the foundry slowly, but steadily, grew and flourished. In 1909 Mr. McKee sold his holdings to George Hemmerley, and Mr. Lowry and Mr. Hemmerley, changing the name to the Ellwood Foundry, operated together until 1918, when extra machinery was purchased and a shop building was added to the plant already in existence, and the name was changed to the Ellwood Foundry and Machine Shop. Thirty hands were employed by the Ellwood Foundry and Machine Company, Inc., which had 10,000 square feet of space in its buildings in addition to the 1,800 square feet in the machine shop. Goods were shipped by the foundry and machine shop to all parts of North America.
Mr. Carbeau found time, outside of his interests in this company, to be a prominent member of the Ellwood City Lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, to be vice-president of the Ellwood City Kiwanis Club, and to be a leader in the Chamber of Commerce of that city. He was also a Scout Master in charge of the Kiwanis Club troop of Boy Scouts, numbering thirty. He and his family attended the English Lutheran Church in Ellwood City.
