He was reared in Hickory township, Forest County, Pennsylvania, received a com­mon-school education, and after attaining his majority worked in the Venango oil region for twelve years. Returning to Hickory township in 1888, he en­gaged in farming, and beginning in October, 1889, again was working in the Venango County oil regions. He was a member of the I. O. O. F., and in politics was a Republican. He and his wife attended the services of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
