He came with his parents to Butler County, Pennsylvania, when about six years old, was educated in a select school and at Dayton Academy, and taught for several terms. He was honorably discharged from the service on May 26, 1863, and returned to Butler County. Returning home he resumed his duties on the farm. He was an elder in the United Presbyterian church, and in politics, he was a Republican.
