He received a common-school training, and worked on his father's farm until thirty-two years of age, part of the time in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, his father having purchased 143 acres there in 1839. John bought his own property in 1856.
He and his wife were members of the United Presbyterian church; in politics he was a Republican.
