He was reared in his native township and received a good education. Leaving school, he read medicine and attended the College of Physicians and Surgeons, of Baltimore, and the Jefferson Medical college, of Philadelphia, from which latter institution he was graduated in 1877. He then came to Dayton, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, where he entered upon the practice of medicine. In 1883 he took part of a post-graduate course at the Jefferson Medical college.
In politics Dr. Calhoun was a pronounced republican. He and his wife were members of the Reformed Presbyterian church.
