General Notes: Husband - James H. Maize
Orphaned in childhood, he experienced the hardships incident to the modern "struggle for existence," at an age when other boys are in school. At fourteen he was apprenticed to learn the printer's trade, and the better part of his education was gained while thus employed. At the age of twenty-two, he was called from the compositor's desk by an appointment as deputy prothonotary of Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, and he was connected with official life at Brookville for about nine years. He was twice elected, and once appointed, by Gov. Pattison, justice of the peace of Brookville borough, but in 1883 during his third term, he resigned to accept the position of cashier in the First National Bank of Punxsutawney, the institution having just been organized. He resigned this post in November, 1895. In April, 1896, the directors of the Citizens Bank of Punxsutawney, a State bank, organized in 1890, offered him the position of cashier.
He and his wife were leading members of the M. E. Church, of which he was a trustee. He belonged to Hobah Lodge, F. and A. M., at Brookville, in which he was a past master, and to the Royal Arcanum. Politically he was a Democrat of the old-fashioned sort, being a steadfast supporter of sound money and national honor.
