He attended school until he was about seventeen years of age, and then went to the high school at Greenville, Mercer County, PA. After graduating therefrom and being fully equipped for the duties of life, he began farming on the family homestead. In 1881 he engaged in the manufacture of cider and jellies, and in 1896 began making vinegar on a large scale, and became one of the heavy shippers throughout the West. He had the largest vinegar plant in the state of Pennsylvania, the same being supplied with all the appliances known to modern science. His manufactory embraced sixty vats, holding from seventy-five to two hundred barrels each, and his warehouse stored an average of one thousand barrels of vinegar. His homestead, which contained two hundred and fifty acres, was known as the "Valley Farm."
In his religious faith, Mr. Campbell was a Presbyterian, while in his political views he supported the Democratic ticket. He was a member of the school board and served in that capacity for sixteen years. He was also the trustee for several important estates, and was implicitly trusted and universally honored.
