General Notes: Husband - James Donald Cameron

He received a classical education, and studied at Princeton College. Upon leaving college he entered the Middletown Bank as clerk, of which he subsequently became cashier. From 1866 to 1874 he was president of the Northern Central Railroad, in which latter year the road was leased to the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. Gen. Grant appointed him Secretary of War, May 22, 1876, which position he held until the close of that administration. In 1876 he was a delegate to the National Republican Convention at Cincinnati, and upon the resignation of his father, Gen. Cameron, as United States senator, was elected by the Legislature to fill the vacancy, and subsequently re-elected for the full term ending March 3, 1885.
