General Notes: Husband - Samuel C. Porter
He was a native of Greene Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and he was reared and educated in that locality. At the time of the Confederate raid into Pennsylvania in 1863 he had been engaged in farming for a number of years, but left the field and enlisted in the Fifty-fifth Pennsylvania State Militia Volunteers, and after his short military service returned to his old-time occupation. In the spring of 1882 he purchased three hundred and thirty-five acres of land, which in time became widely known as "Maple Hill Farm" and was conducted by Samuel C. Porter and his younger brother William. They made a specialty of raising potatoes and wheat, and, in connection with their general farming operations, operated a model dairy of twenty-five head of cattle.
He was for a long time an influential Republican especially devoted to the furtherance of the educational system of the township, his services as a member of the school board covering many terms.
He was also interested in insurance matters, being for many years a director of Greene Township Mutual Insurance Company.
His religious faith was founded on the tenets of the United Presbyterian Church.
