After finishing his schooling, he was associated with his father in the iron manufacturing business, the tannery business and in the mining industries. He died at the early age of thirty-nine years, his wife preceding him to the grave, having died when thirty-four years old. Upon the death of the parents the children were taken by their grandfather, the Hon. David Caldwell, and were under his control until his death.

The source gives his year of birth as 1855. This seems too late. If it was earlier, then the year of his death would be correspondingly earlier.
