The Bush family trace their ancestry to Baron Bush, the wealthy nobleman of Stuttgart, Germany; one of the daughters of this family married a Bonaparte of France.

He was a native of Prussia, whence he fled to America on account of a religious disturbance. He settled in Mt. Pleasant township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he resided until his death. Besides farming he also carried on a tannery for quite a number of years. He was a member of the Lutheran church and in politics accepted the teachings of Jefferson.
