He was of Scotch ancestry and was among the early settlers of Crawford County, Pennsylvania. He secured a large tract of land on the line of Mercer and Crawford counties and his will is recorded in Will Book A, page 141, Crawford County records. He was one of the early elders of the Presbyterian Church and was known as "the praying elder".
