General Notes: Husband - Reuben Ayres Heaton
He received a good education and a thorough business training, both of which he turned to excellent account in after years. Early in life he was attracted to Tamaqua, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, by the anthracite coal trade, which was then in the early stage of its development, and with which he subsequently became prominently identified. Beginning life as a clerk in the employ of firms at Tamaqua and Mauch Chunk, engaged in the coal industry, he rapidly acquired a thorough knowledge of that business, and in 1835 located at Tamaqua and embarked in business for himself, opening the colliery known as High Mines, near that borough, In 1861 when the impetus given to every branch of industry by the civil war, had created an extraordinary demand for coal, he opened the Preston colliery at Girardville, and operated it profitably until 1864, when he sold out and retired from business. Upon his retirement he went to Philadelphia, where he lived, enjoying in his declining years the fruits of an active life and successful business career. In politics he was a republican, but while giving his party a loyal and active support at all times, he never sought office or became in any sense a politician.
