He settled on his homestead [in Indiana County, Pennsylvania,] in 1849.

He was born in eastern Pennsylvania, and came, in an early day, into Indiana County, to Conemaugh township. He learned, when young, the trade of shoemaker, which he followed for several years before engaging in his main life pursuit of farming. He was a republican in politics and a member of the United Presbyterian church.
