He was educated at Sugargrove Seminary, and Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, from which he graduated, after which he took up electrical engineering; he was employed with the Westinghouse and Union Switch & Signal Company of Pittsburgh, then engaged in electrical business on his own account at Syracuse, New York, but was forced in 1909 to abandon it on account of his health.
