General Notes: Husband - James Wilson
He was born in County Down, Ireland, and came to the United States about 1804, in his young manhood. He located in Philadelphia, and took employment under Colonel William Duane, on the Aurora newspaper, issued from a building which had formerly been the home of Philadelphia's early printer, Benjamin Franklin.
Young Wilson developed a real talent for his chosen calling, and in 1812 became manager of the paper. Colonel Duane having been appointed adjutant-general of Pennsylvania. Shortly afterward Wilson went to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, just growing into cityhood, expecting to embark in the newspaper business, but soon went on to Steubenville, Ohio, where he established The Western Herald, which had a long and influential existence. In 1832 he began the Pennsylvania Advocate, at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at first printing it in Steubenville, but soon setting up a press in Pittsburgh-the first west of the Allegheny mountains capable of printing a broadside (two pages) at one impression. In the publication of this paper he had the labor of four of his sons, and to the eldest of these, William Duane, he ultimately committed the Advocate, he himself passing his time alternately at Steubenville and Pittsburgh, looking after his newspaper and other interests in both places. He was a man of exceeding strong character, positive in his opinions, unyielding in their maintenance, and his writings were couched in a vigorous style, such as is unknown at the present day. He died in Steubenville, Ohio, during a cholera epidemic. [GPHAV, 672]
