General Notes: Husband - James J. Hays
He spent his youth and early manhood on a farm, attended the common schools at intervals, and on attaining his majority engaged in agriculture, which he followed until 1884. In that year he abandoned farming and went into the lumber business at Polk, Venango County, Pennsylvania, and three years later, February, 1888, opened a general hardware store. In politics Mr. Hays was a Democrat, and an active member of the I. O. O. F.
In 1887, he was a tax assessor in the borough of Polk, Venango County, Pennsylvania. He was also an early postmaster (like his father had been in Sunville), and in that year he also began a two-year town council term as its secretary. He again served on the town council in 1890.
