General Notes: Husband - Judge Joseph Buffington
He attended the Lambeth and other schools of Kittanning, Pennsylvania, and in the autumn of 1871 entered Trinity college, from which institution he was graduated in July, 1875. He read law with Judge James B. Neale, of Kittanning, and Judge Logan, of Greensburg, was admitted to Armstrong County bar, September 5, 1878, and formed a law partnership with Judge Neale, which lasted until the latter took his seat on the bench in 1879. In 1881 he and his brother, Orr Buffington, formed a law partnership under the firm-name of Buffington & Buffington.
His political connections have been with the republican party, and he has taken an active part in advocating the measures and men of that organization.
After preparatory education he obtained the degree of Bachelor of Arts at Trinity College, Connecticut, in 1875, then taking up the study of the law. In 1878 he was admitted to legal practice, and from that year until 1892 followed his profession at Kittanning, Pennsylvania. Appointed district judge of the Western District of Pennsylvania in 1892, he filled this post until 1906, and on September 21, of the latter year, he was appointed to a higher judicial place: United States Circuit Judge of the Third Circuit. Judge Buffington compiled a splendid record on the bench, and was noteworthy for his long, continuous, and able discharge of public duties. Judge Buffington received honorary degrees as follows: LL.D., Lafayette College, 1915, also from Trinity College, University of Pittsburgh, Princeton, and Washington and Jefferson; and D.C.L. from Mt. St. Mary's College.
