He kept a hotel at West Chester, Pennsylvania, at a tavern stand known as the "White Hall," a venerable hostelry, and well known throughout that region for many years. About 1813, in hopes of bettering his fortunes in the then West, he left Chester County, went over the mountains and settled at Pine creek, about five miles above Pittsburgh, on the Allegheny river.
