He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, 27 August 1941; he served until 23 September 1946. He saw action in the American, European, Middle East, African, Asi­atic and Pacific Fronts, and served aboard the U.S.S. Kirkpatrick, as Chief Electrician's Mate. He was awarded the Good Conduct, Defense and World War II Victory Medals while in the service.
