General Notes: Husband - William C. Steele
He was educated in the public schools of Brownsville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, with the exception of one year at Southwestern Normal School.
In 1878 he became junior partner with his father in the firm of Samuel Steele & Son. They used 150 cords of bark, and tanned 1,000 hides per year. They shipped their leather largely to Iowa and Minnesota. William C. Steele continued in the tanning business until 1888, when he closed up the affairs of the firm, and retired from the business. In 1887 he engaged in mercantile business in Brownsville. He was located on the Hogg corner in a commodious room, where he carried a large stock of boots, shoes, leather, hats and caps.
He was a prominent republican. He was elected a member of the town council in 1885, and was re-elected in 1888 for a term of three years.
In the spring of 1899 Mr. Steele sold out his business to become postmaster of Brownsville under appointment of President McKinley, assuming the duties of the postoffice on February 15, 1899.
