He enlisted in 145th Volunteers of Pennsylvania for service in the Civil War. He was captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 2, 1863; confined at Belle Isle Prison, also at the hospital in Richmond, Virginia. He was a prisoner 137 days. He died three days after he was exchanged.
