He was lineally descended from Richard Buffington, born in Great Marlow, Buckinghamshire, England, in 1654, whose eldest son, according to a statement in the Pennsylvania Gazette, published in Philadelphia, for the week ending July 5, 1739, was the first English child born in the province of Pennsylvania.

He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, and the founder of the Buffington family in the Lykens valley, Pennsylvania.
