He attended the subscription schools in early life, and then married. They settled on a farm adjoining the home place in Fallowfield township, Washington County, Pennsylvania.
He was a Whig and Republican, serving as justice of peace, and also filling the office of constable for ten or fifteen years. He and his wife were members of the Disciple Church, of which he was an elder.

Beside the three children listed, he and his wife had five others who were deceased before 1893.
