He was given the advantages of the public schools of Beaver, Pennsylvania, and he was graduated from the Beaver High School in 1913. In 1917 Washington and Jefferson College gave him the degree of Bachelor of Arts. On leaving that institution, Mr. Buchanan served in the United States Army, where he received the commission of second lieutenant, until February 15, 1919. After his discharge, Mr. Buchanan returned to Beaver and took up the study of law at the University of Pittsburgh, and by reading in the office of H. F. Reed, an attorney of the county seat. In 1922 he passed the Supreme Court bar examinations and was admitted to the bar of the county, and in the same year he began the practice of his profession, establishing offices in Commerce Street, Beaver.
Mr. Buchanan gave his political allegiance to the Democratic Party. He was a member of the Beaver Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons; the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, and Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity; the Beaver Valley Country Club; and the Beaver Valley Chamber of Commerce. He attended the First Presbyterian Church in Beaver.
