He was reared and educated in Franklin, Pennsylvania. He learned the plas­terer's trade, but in 1877 embarked in the grocery business. Politically he was a Democrat, and served eleven con­secutive years in the city council. He was a member of the I. O. R. M., K. of P., K. of H., and B. P. O. E.
