He was of Irish parentage.
He was one of the earliest settlers of Hopewell township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. On April 7, 1785, he bought four hundred and five acres of land, situated on the waters of Buffalo Creek, of Jesse Martin, it being the tract named "Buffalo."
