He was educated in private schools entirely. At a very early age he was employed by Logan, Gregg & Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the hardware business, with whom he remained four years, at the expiration of that time moving to Peoria, Illinois, where he remained for two years, engaging in business. He then returned to Pittsburgh and re-entered the employ of Logan, Gregg & Company where he was employed for two years, finally moving to Titusville in 1884 and there establishing a hardware store, which eventually grew to such an extent that it became the largest of its kind in northwestern Pennsylvania, having branches in Erie and Oil City. Aside from his hardware business, Mr. Bryan was engaged in the production of crude oil in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Oklahoma. He was interested in many educational and philanthropic movements, and for many years was president of the Titusville Hospital. He was also one of the members of the original board of trustees of the Benson Memorial Library. He took an active interest in local and state politics, his sympathies and vote always being on the side of the Democratic party. He was a member of the Masonic order, and of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite; a member of the Society of Sons of the American Revolution, and was for many years an elder of the First Presbyterian Church.
