He attended the Grapeville, Pennsylvania, schools, Harrison City academy and Duff's Commercial Business College of Pittsburgh, from which institution he was graduated in 1864. After completing his business course at Pittsburgh he engaged in farming and in the mercantile business with his father at Grapeville. At the death of the latter he purchased the store, and beginning in 1872 successfully conducted a mercantile business at that place.
He was a republican and served as a member of the county committee of that party ever since attaining his majority. He owned a valuable farm on which were four strong flowing natural gas wells. Mr. Brown is a member of Jeannette Council, No. 1,144, Royal Arcanum, the only order to which he ever aspired. He was proprietor of the town of East Jeanette.

He started early in life to "paddle his own canoe," and as a boy of eight years earned his first shilling from Mr. James Agnew for one day's labor.
He entered his father's store in 1857, established the Grapeville post office in 1867 and was postmaster for many years. He was a school director for three years; chairman of the Republican county committee in 1891 and 1893 and in both campaigns his party won complete victories; elected to the State Senate in 1892 and reelected in 1896; was the nominee of Westmoreland County for Congress in 1894 in the district composed of Armstrong, Indiana, Jefferson and Westmoreland counties when Hon. D. B. Heiner was renominated at the last minute to file nomination papers on the three hundred and twenty-fifth ballot; when in 1901 Westmoreland County became entitled to the office of county controller, he was appointed by the Governor and afterward elected for one term. This is one of many testimonials:

Brown has done more for the success of the Republican party in Westmoreland county than any other man by and through his sagacity, untiring zeal and unreserved expenditure of time and of his own personal means, therefore, be it Resolved: That this convention as the representative of the Republicans of Westmoreland county do extend to Hon. John H. Brown their most hearty and unanimous thanks in token of appreciation of his valuable services and zealous and unflinching work in behalf of the Republican party and its doctrines.
