His father was born in Ireland, and died in Franklin county, Pennsylvania.

He was born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and immigrated to Sewickley township, Westmoreland County, when quite a young man.

He was a farmer by occupation.

He had only one child by his first wife; with his second wife he had a large family.

One of his nephews was William H. Brown, a well-known coal operator on the Monongahela river.
