After completing his early schooling at Mars, Butler County, Pennsylvania, he was graduated from the Grove City College and then attended the University of Michigan. He then taught school at Mars for two years, after which he served as principal of the high school at Freedom, Pennsylvania. In 1918 he became principal of Ambridge High School, and beginning in 1920 was superintendent of Mars Borough schools.
He was a Republican, a member of the United Presbyterian Church, and belonged to the Masonic Lodge and Knights of Pythias.
