He was born December 21, 1836. [HMC 1909, 863]
During the prevalence of the gold excitement in 1852, he made an extended visit to California, going by the overland route from St. Joseph by ox-teams, occupying from the 4th of May to the 4th of September, in reaching Placerville. He remained there until the 7th of November, 1855, when he returned to the “States,” but very little richer than he left them. He was down with the ague for a long time which, of course, retarded his progress to a great extent.
He served in the Civil war. In politics he voted the Republican ticket, and in November, 1880, he was elected county commissioner for Mercer County. He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian Church of Fairfield.
