His father was a native of Ireland, and came to Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, at an early date.

He and his wife removed from Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, in 1805, and settled in Shenango Township, Mercer County. They had seven children, all of whom were deceased before 1888.
