He was educated in the select schools of Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania. He came with his parents to North Strabane township, Washington County, in 1874, and after his father's death conducted the farm for his mother and sisters. After marriage he moved to Canonsburg, where he owned a handsome residence. He and his wife were members of the M. E. Church of Canonsburg, and he was one of the prosperous men in that borough. In politics he was a Republican.
