General Notes: Husband - Dr. Alexander Samuel Harshberger

After receiving his elementary education in the common schools of Port Royal, Juniata County, Pennsylvania, he was prepared for college by a three years' course at Airy View Academy, at Port Royal. At the age of nineteen, he entered the University of Pennsylvania, from which, after two years and a half of study, he was graduated with honors in the class of 1870. He began practice in Milroy, Mifflin County, as the partner of his father, a physician of high standing, with an extensive practice. The elder Doctor retiring from the active duties of his profession in 1880, was succeeded by his son, who continued to practice in Milroy until 1884. He then removed to Lewistown, where he continued to practice.
He was a member in good standing of the State Medical Association, and of the Medical Society of Mifflin County. He was affiliated with Lewistown Lodge, No. 203, F. and A. M.; Lewistown Chapter, No. 186, R. A. M., and Lewistown Commandery, No. 26, K. T.; Lewistown Lodge, No. 97, I. O. O. F.; and Council No. 1,394, Royal Arcanum; all at Lewistown. The Doctor adhered to the Republican party.

He was educated at Airy View Academy, Port Royal, Pennsylvania, a graduate of the class of 1867, after which he read medicine with his father until March, 1869, when he entered the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania, whence he was graduated M. D., class of 1870. For the first thirteen years of his professional life he practised in association with his father, Dr. Abraham Harshberger, gaining in actual sick-room practise and by association with the veteran army surgeon a most valuable experience. In August, 1884, he moved to Lewistown, Pennsylvania, where he established a successful general medical and surgical practise. He was surgeon-in-chief and president of the board of directors of Lewistown Hospital, a position he filled from the time of its erection in 1907. He was a member of the American Medical, the Pennsylvania State and Mifflin County Medical societies, and also contributed occasional articles to the medical journals, treating of special or unusual cases that occur in his practice. For fifteen years or more he was surgeon to the Pennsylvania Railroad Company and he served on the state and local boards of health. He had business interests outside his profession, including a directorship in the Mann Edge Tool Company. In political belief he was a Republican and for sixteen years or more served his borough as school director. He was a member of Lodge No. 203, Free and Accepted Masons; Chapter No. 186, Royal Arch Masons; Commandery No. 26, Knights Templar; and Lodge No. 97, Independent Order of Odd Fellows and belonged to the beneficial order, Royal Arcanum. In religious faith he was a Presbyterian.
