General Notes: Husband - Francis Smith

He was born five miles east of Ligonier in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, grew to manhood on his father's farm, and received his education in the subscription schools of his neighborhood. He assisted his father in the management and cultivation of the home farm until 1836. In that year he joined the westward tide of emigration to Ohio and after an examination of several sections of the "Buckeye" state he located in Cleveland and engaged in the grocery business, which he followed for one year. In 1837 he returned to his native township, purchased the Finley farm and was engaged in its cultivation and improvement for fourteen years. In 1851 he sold that farm and bought another farm, which was one-half mile west of Ligonier. There he resided and devoted his attention to farming and stock-raising.
He was a republican and a member of the United Presbyterian church.
