General Notes: Husband - Francis Bushnell
In 1635, his five living sons left their native shore bound for America, and four years later he followed with his two daughters, aboard the St. John. After they had been at sea about ten days, the company formulated a covenant, sometimes called "The Plantation Covenant," upon which his name appears third. The company landed at Fair Haven, Connecticut, between the 10th and the 15th of July 1639, and two months later the deed was signed for their new settlement at Menunkatuck, purchased of the Quinipiac Indians. They named the new settlement Guilford after the shire town in Surrey from which some of the emigrants came. He does not seem to have been very active in the affairs of the colony, although his home lot of about three and one-half acres, on the N.E. corner of the roads now known as Fair and Broad Sts., was one of the choice locations. [Allison Genealogy, 34]
Ye Elder Francis Bushnell, the progenitor of the Bushnell family in America; married Rebekah Holmes; they were of Horsted in Surrey, Eng.
They sailed from London in 1639, in the company of Rev. Henry Whitfield. During the voyage the passengers formulated the plantation covenant and Francis Bushnell was among the twenty-five signers. The company reached New Haven in July, purchased lands from the Indians, and established a plantation which remained independent until 1643, when it was admitted to the New Haven Colony and named Guildforde. Frances Bushnell died 1646; his will was the first probated at Guildford, Conn. [GGSOPF, 191]
