General Notes: Husband - William Douglas Burns

He received his early education in the public and other schools, first attending the Burns public school in Clarion township, then public and subscription schools and Carrier Seminary in Clarion, Pennsylvania. In youth he learned the printing business in the office of The Clarion Democrat, was foreman of that office for about a year, and followed the printing business for several years. He graduated at Iron City College, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, May 1, 1869, and later taught public schools in Clarion county for five terms. During this latter period he began the study of law in the office of Colonel James B. Knox, afterward president judge of the eighteenth judicial district, and was admitted to the bar on May 5, 1874. Beginning in 1875 he was engaged in the practice of his profession in Clarion, Pennsylvania, and has built up a good practice. He still retained the interest in the newspaper business which he acquired early in life as a printer, and wrote much for newspapers in that section. He was four times elected burgess of Clarion town, for the fourth time for a term of three years. He was a Democrat in politics; but was never a candidate for more than a town office until 1911, when he was nominated by his party for district attorney, and was elected in November, 1911, to serve in the office for a term of four years. He was a Presbyterian, and one of the elders and the clerk of the session of the Clarion Presbyterian Church. For many years he was the secretary of the Clarion Bar Association. He resided at 214 Wood street, Clarion, Pennsylvania.
